Iowa requires a state-issued Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) credential from the Iowa Board of Massage Therapy, part of the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), before anyone may practice massage therapy or use the title "LMT," "massage therapist," "masseur," or "masseuse" (Iowa Code §152C.5). Applicants must complete at least 600 hours of board-approved massage therapy education and pass the MBLEx or an NCBTMB examination. Licenses renew every two years and require 16 hours of continuing education, though first-time licensees are exempt from the CE requirement at their first renewal.

Continuing Education

16 hours every 2 years.

IAC 481—823.2 requires 16 hours of continuing education each 2-year renewal biennium; first-time licensees are not required to complete CE before their first renewal. At least 8 of the 16 hours must be earned through in-person or live, real-time interactive instruction. 'Business ethics' and 'massage ethics' are listed as acceptable topics within the optional business-practices CE category (IAC 481—823.3(2)(g)), but no minimum number of hours is specifically mandated for ethics content.

Licensure by Endorsement

Massage therapists licensed in another jurisdiction may apply for licensure by endorsement (IAC 481—821.4): submit transcripts, proof of passing the MBLEx or an NCBTMB exam, verification of license from the most recently issuing jurisdiction, and proof that the issuing jurisdiction's requirements are equal to or exceed Iowa's. Applicants who cannot meet endorsement standards may instead pursue 'licensure by verification' (481—821.5) or a one-year, non-renewable temporary license while completing remaining requirements (481—821.6). An applicant who relocated to Iowa from a state that did NOT require massage therapy licensure may submit proof of work experience in lieu of Iowa's educational/training requirements, per 481—821.2(2) and 481—501.2.
